In critical theory, the Black Atlantic is a diasporic culture that formed in Europe, Africa and the United States starting in the 16th century, at the beginning of the modern European era. The need to critically re-evaluate the Enlightenment and capitalist legacy which derived from the colonial period, as pointed out by Paul Gilroy, inspired a unique group show with works by Nanna Debois Buhl, Maryam Jafri, Hank Willis Thomas, and Kiluanji Kia Henda, whose conceptual structure is explained here by curator Luigi Fassi. The booklet is packaged inside a folded poster that contains the artists’ biographies.
